Sumanto is a Senior Research Fellow at the Clinical Nutrition Research Centre within the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences) at A*STAR, Singapore. His principle research interests include the investigation of food-based components to alleviate the risk of chronic diseases, including metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. He has extensive experience in dietary intervention trials, that look at both short and longer term biochemical, physiological and metabolic responses associated with several chronic diseases. He has a particular interest in dietary plant bioactives (e.g., polyphenols) and exploring inter-individual variability in responses. While his initial research training was undertaken in the UK, after moving to Singapore he has been working on several projects exploring the Asian phenotype and its response to the Asian diet.
